SpamX Setup |
|
NOTE: Print this page for reference All SpamX setup can be performed from the Config application found on the Control Strip above. The Config application runs automatically and opens the Incoming Accounts and Outgoing Complaint windows the first time SpamX is run on your system. Fill these out with your email account information right from your regular email client account(s), select the folder where the spams will be stored, choose the run mode and SpamX is ready to rock. Use the Help buttons in the setup windows to access the appropriate help. |
|
Open your email client and open your primary [default] account. On most email clients the default account contains all the information on you need to set up the two SpamX account windows. A figure showing the email client account to SpamX account mappings for quick reference can be seen here . |
|
1) Define email account(s) for Scheduled operation. This step is unnecessary if SpamX will be run in Proxy Mode - Just close the Account windows. |
| Go back to
SpamX Configuration
, click on the Scheduling menu item and select
Accounts
. Click the
+New
button in the accounts window and copy the information from your default account into the proper
fields in the
New Account
window. The Display name field is exactly that and has no effect on function. Click OK to save the information and the account you just defined will be in the Accounts list. Close the Accounts List window when you are finished. |
|
2) Define the Complaints account
|
| Close the Accounts window and select
Complaints -> Account
in SpamX Configuration. Enter the information from the default account there as well noting that some of the information may be different: a) Complaint Return Address: This can be your real email address or you can get and use a free email address from one of the many services depending on whether or not you are interested in seeing the results of your spam reports in your regular email account or if you want them to go to a different account. b) Your Outgoing SMTP Server may or may not be different from the POP Server in the last window - If it is in your eMail Client then it needs to be that way here, too - This depends on how your ISP chose to set it up. Click OK when done. |
|
3) Saved spam Directory
|
| The spams directory defaults to the /SpamX/spams directory. To change the default click the Browse button under the Saved Spam Directory field in the SpamX Configuration Window, click the desired folder in the list that appears and click OK/Choose. The new directory will now appear in the Saved Spam Directory field right above the Browse button. |
|
4) Primary and Secondary Name Servers
|
| YOU MUST enter valid DNS server names or IP addresses in the Primary and Secondary
Name Server fields. Select from the pulldown lists for each or carefully follow the instructions on the DNS Servers page. IMPORTANT NOTE: If there is the slightest doubt - USE THE PULLDOWNS! SpamX will not intercept spam if the Name Servers are not true DNS servers! v3.0 Config will now test the servers entered in either field for validity when the configurations are saved - A working Internet connection is required when saving. Click Save. |
|
Startup Options |
|
If your Email client does not allow entry of a Proxy server:
NOTE: On Windows systems the Internet Options claims to allow proxy operation - This does NOT work for Email and cannot be used. Mozilla Thunderbird supports Proxy Mode operation on Windows systems. Set the proxy per the instructions on the Proxy Setup page. |
| Select
Sched at start
for "always on" connection or
OFF at start
for dialup. The Scheduling:Settings are preset to the minimum check interval in Scheduled mode. If for some reason you need to change this go to the Scheduling menu item and select Settings. It is recommended to either set your email client for manual checking or setting it for some long interval like 60 minutes or higher. |
|
Proxy Mode Operation [Start with Proxy]
Select "Proxy at start" if your system/Email client allow running through a proxy. |
| Mozilla Thunderbird allows Proxy operation on any operating system that supports it. MS Entourage running under Mac OS X and Netscape Communicator running under Solaris also allow Proxy operation - This may also be possible for other Email clients running on other Operating Systems See Proxy Mode Setup for the settings for Proxy Mode operation. |
View Checkboxes Spam source Causes spam to be viewed as source text with headers - This is the safest way to view spam as it disables "Web Bugs" and keeps the spammer from knowing their mail has even been seen. SpamX is immune to viruses, JavaScript and other exploits in either mode but Source mode is always recommended, regardless as it is both safer and faster. Check Spam has a button to switch the view to "Normal" mode which supports HTML viewing of most email sent in that format. Small Icons Sets the SpamX Control Strip to small icon view to conserve screen space. The Control Strip can also be minimized in the normal way for your system without affecting operation. |
|
The Connection Mode icon on the Control Strip has three Icons associated with it depending on the mode selected for SpamX operation. See Scheduling for views of the Control Strip in the three different operating modes. If Sched at start or Proxy at start were selected when configuring SpamX for the first time, be sure to click the Connection Mode icon once if it is not shown in the ON [in color] condition. Clicking the icon toggles the state of the connection between the ON and OFF states. TIP: Clicking to OFF then back to ON in Scheduled mode will force a check of the mail server(s) immediately at any time. When operating SpamX in Manual mode - Clicking the Connection Mode icon ["MAN"] once will check the server(s). |
|
Save Click Save then Close in the Config window. NOTE: SpamX checks the name servers for validity so an Internet connection is required if entries have been made in either the Primary or Secondary Name Server fields. |
| Importing Addresses If you want to import your address book from your Email application, follow this link for instructions on exporting an address book as a file: Address Book Export Then follow these links for instructions on importing the exported file: Open Config Select the Import menu. Select Friend from the Import menu. |
| Importing Domain Cross-References SpamX includes a list of common domain cross references. These are domains that are commonly also called by other domain names. Importing these into SpamX will reduce false positives when receiving mail. Select the Import menu. Select Translate from the Import menu. Click "Line by Line comma separated pairs" in the resulting window then click Continue. Make sure you are in or navigate to the SpamX folder then select the XDomainsImport file and click Open. |
